Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, spoke at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Lamola stressed South Africa's determination to defend the right of self-determination of the Palestinian people, saying: “South Africa reaffirms its unwavering support and solidarity for the Palestinian people.” he said.
Calling for the recognition of Palestine as a state, Lamola said: “We call on all member states to recognize the State of Palestine and act in solidarity with its people. We continue to call for an end to Israel's illegal occupation, ongoing genocide and efforts to permanently displace the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.” he said.
Lamola said she was concerned about the attacks on UN Human Rights Council Special Procedural Officers, particularly the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, saying: “Special Procedural Officers play a key role in the promotion and protection of human rights and must be protected. We must accept that understanding is a prerequisite for peace. Let us not leave our children a legacy of prejudice and hatred.” he said.
