Named after the Gaca region, the city's oldest settlement, the team consisting of 11 students from different high schools implemented the project “Electronic and Software Development System for Autonomous Vehicles”.
“The Gaca” team, which started working at the Mustafa Yılmaz Embedded System Technologies Application Center about five months ago, built the system it developed on a vehicle structure that includes all the basic functions of autonomous driving.
The system ensures that software modules such as steering, cruise control, battery management, sensor data collection, obstacle detection and route tracking work according to the same principles as in autonomous vehicles. The electronic control cards, motor drivers, sensors and communication units used have been integrated to provide the data flow required for autonomous driving.
On the software side, image processing, sensor fusion, decision algorithms and driving control mechanisms were tested on this system and the error rate was reduced by analyzing the data obtained. Thanks to this method, software and electronic systems were tested in autonomous vehicles before testing and any errors were corrected in a safe environment.
The system not only gives students experience in recognizing, analyzing and applying real-world autonomous systems, but also enables companies to save time and money by conducting the preliminary phase of large-scale testing on this system.
“The Gaca” team won the first prize in the “High School” category with the project they developed at the “8th International Research and Development Projects Market” held at Bartın University on November 20-21, with the participation of 539 projects from 6 countries.
“We all worked purposefully”
Yusuf Hamza Demir, an 11th grade student at Zonguldak Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, said that the testing processes of large autonomous vehicles are costly.
Pointing out that they do not participate in competitions just to win prizes, Demir said: “The Gaca team has been participating in competitions for six years. The last competition we took part in, we won first place. It is important to receive awards. These things will stand out for us in the future. We all worked with determination. There were moments when we left the workshop late at night.” he said.
Expressing that they received good reactions, Demir said, “There were a lot of people who congratulated us. It's really a great thing that we are doing these things at our age. We are showing our knowledge here. We are not doing it just for reward-oriented reasons, but to learn and improve ourselves.” he said.
Demir pointed out that the project could be further developed, adding that they would install a battery, want to equip the vehicle with four-wheel drive and that it was important to try it out.
“It’s team spirit”
Eslem Sibel Yıldırım, a 9th grade student at Zonguldak Science High School, also explained that they work with a team of 11 people and there are moments when they have difficulties.
Noting that they received positive reactions from those around them, which encouraged them even more in the future, Yıldırım said: “We come to the workshop voluntarily to improve ourselves. We not only make new friends, but also participate in various studies. Thanks to our instructors, we learn new things. It is necessary to work on the development of autonomous vehicles. When you come willingly and see that you are improving here, you realize that there are actually no difficulties.” he said.
Muhammed Okbi, a 10th grade student at Zonguldak Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, said that the vehicle has 3 Zed cameras and Lidar (light detection and ranging), and that with Zeds they can perform obstacle detection, lane detection and object detection.
Stressing that they are a good team, Okbi said: “This is team spirit. We learn everything from each other. We try to do our work with joy. I think everyone should have a goal. We can do it if we are determined. We didn't do this work in a day. We did it when everyone was connected and trusted each other.” he said.
