The head of Hamas's national relations office, Husam Bedran, made a statement marking the 21st anniversary of Arafat's death.
Stressing that Arafat fought to secure the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, Bedran said: “Arafat's memory reminds us of the duty to unite and continue the path of the martyrs.” he said.
Bedran stated that they remember not only Arafat, but also all the Palestinians that Israel massacred with him, adding:
“The crime of the siege and assassination of Arafat against the Palestinian people of the West Bank and Gaza Strip is still being committed today. This situation confirms the need to maintain national unity and present a common combat strategy against the occupying power Israel and its aggressive plans.”
Bedran stressed that Hamas will remain faithful to its promise to protect the rights, land and holy places of the Palestinian people on the 21st anniversary of Arafat's death, stressing that the memory of Arafat will illuminate the path of struggle and liberation.
Bedran also stated that Hamas is in constant contact with Palestinian groups to take joint national steps to combat current challenges, particularly in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as the issue of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
In 2002, Israeli forces placed Arafat under house arrest at their headquarters in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah. Israeli forces, which blockaded the Palestinian government headquarters for two years, also attacked it several times with tanks.
Arafat, who fell ill in 2004, was diagnosed with the flu but was unable to recover. Arafat, who was brought to France for treatment with Israeli permission on October 29, 2004, died on November 11, 2004 at the age of 75 at the Percy Military Hospital in Paris.
