Emmanuel Macron gave a speech at the European Industrial Summit in Antwerp, Belgium.
Macron said Europe should invest in critical minerals and create strategic reserves in this regard.
Macron stressed that he does not believe in “protectionism” and stressed that he does not believe that Europe is the “only pure continent” in the world that does not protect local producers.
Macron said if Europeans want to invest sufficiently in sectors such as defense, space security, artificial intelligence and quantum technology, they could do so through a common credit system.
Macron said it was “madness” to fund solutions outside Europe, arguing that China and the US are investing in both the public and private sectors, while Europe is “lagging behind” in this regard.
Stating that everyone admires Starlink, which offers satellite internet services, Macron said:
“But to be clear, Mr. Musk is probably one of the men in the world who has the most billions of dollars in his pocket from American taxpayers to subsidize. Musk is, first and foremost, a man who is heavily subsidized by federal agencies in the United States. That's good news, he's an extremely innovative guy.”
Macron argued that the US was becoming an unpredictable economic power and government, saying: “China is an authoritarian regime, don't get me wrong, this is their collective decision.” he said.
Macron explained that in the midst of all this, Europe is a place where the rule of law and predictability prevail.
