Food aid from AFAD to Sudan, where conflict continues

Food was provided to 1,500 needy families in refugee camps in Port Sudan, the administrative center of Sudan.

The four-member AFAD humanitarian assistance team, led by Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) Deputy President Hamza Taşdelen, assessed local needs in Port Sudan and quickly distributed aid with the contributions of the Embassy in Khartoum.

Recalling that they sent two “goods ships” with over 5,000 tons of humanitarian supplies in 2024, Taşdelen explained that they included hygiene, food, shelter materials, medicines and medical equipment.

Taşdelen recalled that they sent 1,000 tents for Sudanese refugees who sought refuge in neighboring Chad due to the conflicts, and stated that they also sent 1,000 food packages there.

The AFAD Vice President explained that through the programs carried out yesterday and today, they have provided food support to 1,500 families displaced from different regions of Sudan in Port Sudan.

Taşdelen explained that before distributing aid, they conducted an on-site needs analysis with the AFAD humanitarian assistance team headed by him, and emphasized that new humanitarian assistance plans will continue in accordance with these analyzes and developments on the ground.

“Türkiye did not neglect the humanitarian dimension of what was happening from the beginning”

Commenting on the developments in Fashir, the center of the North Darfur state in western Sudan, Turkish Ambassador to Khartoum Fatih Yıldız said: “In the last ten days, there have been very heartbreaking developments in Fashir. These developments are being followed very closely by both the entire state administration in Türkiye, especially our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the Turkish people.” he said.

Stating that Türkiye has never neglected the humanitarian dimension of what has happened since the beginning of the Sudanese crisis, Yıldız explained that a delegation led by the AFAD Vice President arrived from Türkiye as part of a four-day visit to assess the needs of humanitarian assistance activities to be carried out in the following period and to consult the expectations of the Sudanese authorities.

Yıldız said: “On this occasion, we visited the camps where displaced people, especially Darfurians, were staying and carried out humanitarian relief operations there.” he said.

Yıldız stated that this visit is a guide for the activities that non-governmental organizations operating in Turkey will carry out in Sudan in the coming period: “The Sudanese people will continue to see that we are by their side, as has been the case since the beginning of the crisis in Sudan.” he said.
