According to the Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TİM), sunflower oil ranked first in grains, pulses, oilseeds and products sector exports in the first two months of the year, with exports amounting to $191.8 million. While chocolate and cocoa products generated sales of $170.3 million, exports of cookies, waffles and noodles exceeded $150 million.
Ahmet Tiryakioğlu, Chairman of the Board of TİM Grains, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Sector, explained that the sector's attention was focused on the tensions in the Middle East during this period when the impact of developments abroad on international trade was intensifying.
Tiryakioğlu stated that recent developments in the region related to Iran have created a new area of uncertainty that impacts global food trade not only politically but also through energy and logistics channels:
“Increasing security risks around the Strait of Hormuz and occasional disruptions in commercial shipping indicate a critical bottleneck in the global movement of goods. Tensions in this corridor, which transports about 20 million barrels of crude oil daily, representing about 20 percent of global consumption, may also be reflected in energy prices in agricultural and food markets.”
Tiryakioğlu mentioned that trade with Iran is an important issue for export companies to maintain their competitiveness in the Middle East, pointing out that Iran, which imports about $4 billion to $5 billion annually in the field of grains, pulses, oilseeds and their products, is also an important market for Turkey.
