EU: It is not possible to give a date for Ukraine's accession

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa held a press conference in Kiev to mark the 4th anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War.

Von der Leyen explained that the EU has provided Ukraine with around 200 billion euros in military and financial support over the past four years, and this amount is more than any other partner.

What is important in this context is the provision of an EU loan of 90 billion euros, emphasized von der Leyen and the continuation of the support.

Von der Leyen said: “This loan was accepted by 27 heads of state and government in the EU Council. The commitments made must and will be kept. We will fulfill these commitments.” he said.

Von der Leyen noted that the loan in question will help meet Ukraine's most urgent defense needs and supply, produce, develop and ensure the security of advanced defense equipment. It said it intended to provide a support package including unmanned aerial vehicles and ammunition before Easter.

Von der Leyen explained that the second main priority was to support Ukraine in the difficult winter period and that she had prepared a new emergency aid package of 100 million euros for the needs that could be met immediately and that this resource could be used immediately.

On the other hand, von der Leyen stated that they are preparing for next winter and said: “We will work on a new winter energy plan called 'Repair and Reconstruction' for the period 2026-2027. This plan will include a 920 million euro package to stabilize the Ukrainian energy system.” gave the information.

Von der Leyen stated that the third priority is to maintain maximum pressure on Russia: “We will soon accept the 20th sanctions package. Our sanctions will continue to reduce Russia's revenues and weaken its war machine.” he said.

The President of the EU Commission recalled that sanctions must be adopted unanimously and explained that the negotiations on the 19 sanctions packages adopted so far were not easy, but ultimately successful.

Ukraine's EU membership

Von der Leyen stated that Ukraine has made good progress towards EU accession and implemented reforms very quickly, recalling that the accession process is based on merits.

Therefore, Von der Leyen pointed out that the pace of progress depends on the candidate country: “I understand how important it is to set a clear date for Ukraine. However, from our point of view, dates cannot be set alone. Nevertheless, our support for Ukraine in achieving its goals is clear and clear.” he said.
