EU investigates Apple – Latest news

The EU Commission announced that it had sent an official notice to Apple regarding the investigation initiated under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on the grounds that app store rules hinder application developers.

The opinion recalled that, under EU law, developers who distribute their applications through the App Store must inform their customers, free of charge, about alternative and cheaper purchasing options, draw their attention to these offers and provide the opportunity to purchase the applications.

The statement noted that Apple was falling short in this area and that the company's terms governing its relationship with application developers, including the App Store's referral rules, did not meet the criteria of EU rules.

The statement noted that the EU Commission has launched a new investigation into Apple due to new contractual requirements for third-party app developers and app stores, including the basic technology fee.

EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton also said on his social media account: “Apple's new slogan should be 'Do things differently',” he said.

“For too long, Apple has been crowding out innovative companies and failing to offer consumers new opportunities and choices.” In his review, Breton stated that additional steps have been taken to ensure that the AppStore and iOS are compatible with DMA.

Under EU technology rules, large companies like Apple and digital platforms are subject to stricter rules. Companies that violate EU digital laws can be fined up to 10 percent of their global turnover.
