Denmark will reopen its embassy in Damascus after 14 years

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen spoke at a joint press conference in the capital Copenhagen with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Immigration and Integration Minister Rasmus Stoklund.

Rasmussen explained that the Danish embassy in Damascus, which has been closed in Syria since 2012, will be reopened this year: “With the reopening of the embassy we can better follow developments in Syria in a positive direction. We also want to strengthen cooperation with Syria on returns.” he said.

Rasmussen met with Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hasan Shaybani in Damascus in November 2025.
