According to news from Indian channel NDTV, the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) investigated the connection between increasing air pollution in urban areas and respiratory diseases.
Ministry officials said in their statement to Parliament on the research that a direct link had been found between acute respiratory infections and levels of air pollution.
The statement said that more than 200,000 people with complaints of acute respiratory infection applied to six public hospitals in the Delhi National Region during 2022-2024.
It was informed that 67,000 54 acute respiratory cases were recorded in 6 major hospitals in Delhi in 2022, 69,293 in 2023 and 68,411 in 2024.
The statement noted that 30,420 of the cases, or about 15 percent, required hospitalization, and emphasized that a sharp increase in the number of patients requiring hospitalization would be observed, especially in 2024.
It was also found that there was an increase in outpatient visits and hospitalizations due to asthma, COPD and lung infections in major cities, particularly Delhi, between 2022 and 2025.
This situation revealed the health damage caused by the air pollution crisis, which has become a serious problem in the region.
