According to KVKK's statement, Bilir addressed the participants of the 4th Personal Data Protection Summit jointly organized with the Turkish Informatics Association at KVKK.
Stating that issues such as technology, information security, data protection, cybercrime and digital economy have expanded the scope of the law, Bilir said: “One of the most important legal issues in the digital era is the protection of personal data.”
Explaining that with the advancement in the field of computer science, a large amount of data is being collected, processed and stored on the Internet and digital platforms, Bilir said, “The existence of legal regulations is important to prevent the misuse of this data.” Firstly, “One of the most important legal developments of the digital age is that data protection and privacy regulations are coming to the fore in our country.” “The most important regulation that comprehensively addresses this issue is the Personal Data Protection Act.”
Bilir pointed out that the security of data is now more important for both individuals and institutions and organizations, stating: “Secure storage and processing of data should be supported not only by administrative measures but also by technical measures.”
Bilir emphasized that the human factor plays an extremely important role in data security and explained that awareness training is one of the important data security measures.
Bilir explained that determining who can access data is one of the cornerstones of data security: “To prevent unauthorized access, each user should only be able to access data that corresponds to their job description.”
“Cyberbullying can have profound effects on individuals”
KVKK President Bilir pointed out that another fundamental component of a strong and effective data security approach is cybersecurity, saying: “Cybersecurity not only creates a line of defense against data breaches, but also provides dynamic and proactive protection against constantly evolving threats.” .
Recalling that October is considered “Cybersecurity Awareness Month” in many countries around the world and in Turkey, Bilir stated that the importance of cybersecurity to data protection should be understood and steps should be taken accordingly.
Emphasizing that social media and some digital platforms have recently become the focus of illegalities and that this poses serious risks to individual privacy, Bilir said: “There is another disadvantage that stands out in social media “Cyberbullying through anonymous accounts.” “Explosion of private life or character assassination based on false information can have a profound impact on individuals,” he said.
Bilir explained that asymmetric attacks spread through social media can become uncontrollable and target individuals and society:
“Although we benefit from the positive aspects of the digital world, we cannot ignore its downsides. Assessing the current privacy and data protection situation, exchanging ideas about policies for the future, and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders will continue to be one of our key priorities at KVKK.”
