Countdown for 5G in Türkiye: Starts on April 1st

Minister Uraloğlu said that only a short period of one month remains for the transition to 5G technology, which will enable a data transfer rate of 20 gigabits per second.

Recalling that a call for R&D support to build 5G mobile communications infrastructure with domestic and national resources was made on January 5, 2023, Uraloğlu said: “R&D support processes were initiated by signing a contract with 14 companies whose applications were found suitable on October 1, 2023. The total amount of R&D support paid to companies in 2025 was 39 million 774 thousand 328 lira With this payment, the total amount of support paid to companies under the tender.” “It reached 162 million 135 thousand 610 lira. The project works of 8 of the projects receiving R&D support under the tender have been completed, and the support program and monitoring activities for the remaining 6 projects are continuing. The remaining projects are scheduled to be completed this year.”

Pointing out that they opened the door to a new era in the field of communications with the 5G permit tender on October 16, 2025, Uraloğlu stated that they created a solid financial and institutional foundation for strategic transformation by generating income of 3 billion 534 million dollars.

5G will be available everywhere in two years

Informing about the 5G transition process in Türkiye, Uraloğlu said: “Our operators continue to work on the introduction of 5G. On January 2, we issued the approval documents specifying the rights and obligations of operators. From April 1, we will provide 5G to citizens in 81 provincial centers across the country. Life with 5G in Türkiye begins a month later. We will provide our citizens at every point “Provide Türkiyes 5G services.” within 2 years.”

Stating that the three major operators Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone continue to prepare their networks to support this technology by purchasing 5G spectrum packages, Uraloğlu stated that efforts will continue to make base stations and infrastructure equipment suitable for this technology.

Regarding the benefits of 5G, Uraloğlu made the following assessment:

“Speed and performance will increase. Mobile Internet speed and data transmission will be much higher than the current 4.5G. Latency will decrease significantly with 5G. This will bring benefits in areas such as remote operations, autonomous vehicles, real-time applications and virtual reality. At the same time, many more device connections will be supported. 5G will also bring a sectoral change. In this context, 5G will have a major impact on areas such as health, education, logistics and manufacturing.”

Stating that they gave priority to domestic and national technologies in the transition to 5G, Uraloğlu aimed to reduce foreign dependence in this area, especially in infrastructure, and move forward with domestic products.

Uraloğlu emphasized that with the transition to 5G technology in Turkey, there will be a big change, especially in communication technologies, saying:

“Domestic and supra-regional products are promoted in the infrastructure. When it comes to approvals to be granted in the field of electronic communications, localization rate criteria are set in such a way that domestic added value increases, and the technology-related localization rates in the operators' infrastructures are regularly monitored. As part of the 5G approvals, it will be mandatory in the first year to use 50 percent of domestically certified products and at least 5 percent of domestic communications products. In subsequent years, the quota will be increased of domestically certified products increased.” For the 4.5G application, this obligation was initially increased to 30 percent and later increased to 45 percent. In this context, 5G will provide a significant advantage over 4.5G, as it provides higher targets in the usage rate of domestic products and increases the speed of mobile communications by 10 times.”
