Transport and Infrastructure Minister Uraloğlu made a written statement on his ministry's “environmentally friendly transportation” activities.
Noting that they are the first ministry in Turkey to carry out carbon footprint calculations, Uraloğlu said: “Our General Directorate of Highways (KGM) is the public institution that plants the most trees per year after the General Directorate of Forestry. In the last 10 years, as a ministry, we have planted 97 million saplings.” he said.
Pointing out that they achieved resource and energy efficiency by recycling 2 million tons of asphalt per year, Uraloğlu said, “The length of the divided road, which was 6,101 kilometers, approached 30,000 kilometers, and with the uninterrupted traffic flow ensured by this divided road network, we have emitted 6.3 million tons less carbon dioxide annually.” gave his assessment.
“We implemented the 96 kilometer long cycle path”
Stating that they continue to implement environmentally friendly practices such as ecological bridges and cycle paths, Uraloğlu said: “We have constructed a 96-kilometer cycle path at various points such as Elazığ Diyarbakır-Sivrice Provincial Road Junction, Trabzon Junction on the Black Sea Coast Road and Van Regional Training and Research Hospital with the help of KGM, and are currently continuing the construction of the 38-kilometer cycle path.” he said.
Uraloğlu continued his statement by stating that environmentally friendly transportation projects are based on harmony with nature and continued his statement as follows:
“We are building ecological bridges at the intersection points identified in the existing highway network with the aim of protecting our country's biodiversity and preserving wildlife routes in a sustainable manner. Within the framework of the ecological highway bridges, we continue our ecological bridge works between Ganita and Pazarkapı on the Black Sea Coastal Road as well as on the Erzurum Northern Ring Road. 19 new ecological bridges in strategic regions such as the Konya-Aksaray State Highway, the Kaş-Kalkan Road and The Şuceken Road location on the Batman-Hasankeyf road was completed in 2021 on the Ankara-Eskişehir high-speed line. We completed the construction of two ecological bridges on the Kırklareli-Pancarköy and Kırklareli-Ağayeri lines and another one on the Ankara-Eskişehir line.
“We will bring 13 million seedlings to earth”
Uraloğlu reminded that the protocol “Every ticket is a sapling of our love for the Green Homeland” was signed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry within the framework of the Green Homeland Mobilization, and said, “For every passenger traveling on our routes Ankara-Istanbul, Ankara-Eskişehir, Ankara-Konya, Ankara-Karaman, İstanbul-Konya, İstanbul-Karaman, Eskişehir-İstanbul travels, there is a ticket. YHT lines Ankara-Sivas and Sivas-İstanbul for one year “We will plant saplings. Considering that an average of 13 million passengers travel on these lines every year, we will plant 13 million saplings,” he gave his assessment.
“We prevented 62 million tons of CO2 emissions with Marmaray”
Pointing out that light rail projects reduce the use of fossil fuels, Uraloğlu said, “With Marmaray alone, we have prevented 62 million tons of CO2 emissions since it was put into operation in 2013.” shared his knowledge.
Stating that they also support environmental transformation in the maritime sector with the Green Port Certificate and decarbonization projects in maritime transport, Uraloğlu pointed out that Türkiye is the second country with the highest number of certificates under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program implemented by the International Airports Council, with 50 airports with carbon-free airport certificates.
