Adolf Hitler wins the election in Namibia

Uunona, a long-time representative of the ruling South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) in Namibia, has been Ompundja's regional representative since 2004.

Uunona, who retained her seat with around 85 percent of the vote in the last election, confirmed in a statement to Germany's Bild newspaper that she is running for a fifth term in local elections on November 26.

Uunona said in a 2020 interview that her father named her after the dictator but “probably didn't even know what Adolf Hitler meant.”

Uunona stated that he only used the name Hitler in official documents and ballot papers, noting that his name was normal for him as a child, but as he grew older he learned the real name Hitler.

The SWAPO party, which has been in power since Namibia's independence on March 21, 1990, is considered an old liberation movement in the fight against the South African apartheid regime. The party won all national elections held after independence. Uunona has been a party member for many years.

The SWAPO Party's struggle took shape in the shadow of Namibia's harsh colonial past.

As a result of the massacre carried out by Germany between 1904 and 1908, which is described as the first genocide of the 20th century, the Hereros lost at least 70 percent of their population and the Namas lost at least 50 percent of their population.

In 2018, Germany returned to Namibia the skulls of 25 people killed during the genocide. Although the Berlin government announced that it recognized the crimes committed during this period in 2021 as genocide, it did not agree to pay compensation, but instead committed to providing 30 years of resources for development projects worth around $1.3 billion in the country.
