The Interbank Card Center (BKM) has announced the dates for 2024.
Accordingly, last year compared to 2023, the number of credit cards rose by 10 percent to 129.4 million, the number of debit cards rose by 3 percent to 194.4 million and the number of prepaid cards rose by 24 percent to 111.6 million. The total number of cards rose 10 percent to 435.4 million.
Card payment amounts have almost doubled.
While credit card payments reached 13.3 trillion lira, an increase of 99 percent, debit card payment amount increased by 59 percent to 2.2 trillion lira and prepaid cards increased by 115 percent to 306.8 billion lira.
Last year, the total number of card payments increased by 92 percent compared to 2023, reaching 15 trillion 845 billion lira.
Online card payments increased to 4.66 billion lira
The total number of payments made with credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards increased by 18 percent to 18.4 billion.
10.5 million of these payments were made with credit cards, 6.5 million with debit cards and 1.4 million with prepaid cards.
Payment numbers increased by 21 percent for credit cards, 10 percent for debit cards and 37 percent for prepaid cards.
Online card payments increased by 97 percent to 4.66 billion lira. The overall share of online card payments was 29 percent. Last year, 3 lira out of 10 lira card payments were made online. The number of online card payments rose by 14 percent to 2.67 million.
The amount of contactless payments reached 4.83 billion lira
The number of contactless card payments rose by 28 percent to 11.96 billion. The amount of contactless payments increased by 113 percent and reached 4.83 billion lira. 4 out of 5 in-store card transactions were contactless.
It showed that of the more than 15.8 trillion lira payments made with cards last year, 5.84 trillion lira were paid online or by mail/telephone sales method, 5.17 trillion lira were paid through the in-store contact payment method were paid and 4.83 trillion lira were paid contactless.
Card payment “Best”s of 2024
In 2024, the highest card payment amount was made on December 30 (New Year's shopping) with 89.2 billion lira.
The highest cash withdrawal by card occurred on June 15, Eid al-Adha, with 26.8 billion lira.
While most online card payments were made on November 11, the discount period, with 11.8 million transactions, a contactless payment record was broken on June 15 with 45.2 million transactions for holiday shopping.
While the day on which the highest card payment amount was made during the year was Monday, the hours were observed to be between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
