TikTok removed 7.1 million pieces of content in Turkey in six months

Emir Gelen, director of public policy at TikTok METAPSA (Turkey, Middle East, Africa, Pakistan, South Asia), said that it is necessary to develop a multi-layered strategy to ensure security on TikTok, where more than 1 billion content be shared per month.

Gelen emphasized that they carry out this process using both artificial intelligence, which allows automatic detection of rule violations, and manual review teams of more than 40,000 people, explaining that their moderation teams work every day to ensure that the content on TikTok are compliant with the “Community Rules”.

Gelen said: “In the seven-month period between January and July this year, more than 427 million TikTok accounts were closed worldwide. 379.7 million of these were accounts that turned out to be fake. 41.8 million accounts were removed on suspicion of being fake under 13 years old. Additionally, more than 7 million people have been closed for violating our Community Rules. he said.

Gelen shared that TikTok publishes the “Security and Transparency Report” quarterly worldwide and makes it available to the public, and continued as follows:

“According to the results published in this report, a total of 7 million 97 thousand 236 videos were removed from the platform in Turkey in the first half of 2024 on the grounds that they violated our Community Rules. 98.67 percent of these videos were removed before they were viewed by users and 88.66 percent were removed and deleted within 24 hours. According to the report's highlights, the rate of videos removed by automated moderation technologies for violating community rules increased from 62 percent last year. “In addition, the proactive detection rate reached its highest level ever at 98.2 percent and the re-upload rate of removed videos was halved compared to the same period last year.”

Gelen explained that TikTok's Community Rules ensure user safety on the platform and enhance positive experiences, explaining that these rules apply to all content and content producers on the platform.

Gelen pointed out that there are standards on various topics as well as rules about what is allowed on TikTok, emphasizing that these guidelines are constantly updated to prevent new risks and harms and that as TikTok they are committed to investing in to continue to give this area priority.
