Director of Cyber Security Vocational School of Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Prof. DR. Bıçakçı evaluated the latest developments in artificial intelligence, which provides convenience in many areas, such as: B. in daily routine tasks, increasing production efficiency, energy saving, health and safety, as well as misuse of this technology.
Pointing out that there have been great advances in artificial intelligence studies, Bıçakcı said that the release of “ChatGPT” and the announcement of the world's first artificial intelligence software developer named “Devin” in the last two years are important developments .
“Most jobs will not disappear, but their number will decrease”
Stating that it is appropriate for young people to be concerned about the problem of unemployment in light of developments, Bıçakçı stated that he does not think it is right to compare artificial intelligence with previous technological developments and continued as follows:
“If you look at previous scientific developments such as calculators, computers, automation tools and the Internet, these new developments have not led to large-scale unemployment.” Perhaps such an understanding exists. However, artificial intelligence is a completely different technology. The newest artificial intelligence software developer named “Devin” is very good at writing code and developing software to intervene when there is a problem with the software. “It seems like it can fix that. In my opinion, in 10 or 20 years, people's productivity will increase enormously and most jobs will not disappear, but their number will decrease significantly.
Explaining that artificial intelligence that handles the routine aspects of work will penetrate our lives more quickly, Bıçakcı said: “The criterion is this: instead of routine tasks such as entering data into a spreadsheet or creating social media content, these “done” much faster thanks to artificial intelligence and your employer will do it for you. There are more routine aspects of these jobs, such as writing front-end programs, more routine, website development, simple programming jobs. “People could become unemployed,” he said.
Bıçakcı explained that artificial intelligence technology offers time advantages when used in daily tasks, and also emphasized that the work can be done more efficiently and with higher quality.
“I wonder if humans and artificial intelligence will face each other?”
Pointing out that the human element is coming to the fore in the field of cybersecurity, Bıçakcı noted that the increasing cybercrime using “deepfake” technology brings new risks and that more cybersecurity officers are needed due to the latest developments.
Evaluating the potential impact of artificial intelligence on cybersecurity, Bıçakcı said:
“I suspect that cybersecurity will be an important area in the future. There is currently talk about artificial general intelligence. While artificial intelligence is better at certain tasks, it turns out that artificial intelligence can become more powerful at most tasks performed by humans.” The process: “I wonder if humans will be confronted with artificial intelligence and whether such a threat to humanity will exist?” “This will be discussed in the long term. Artificial intelligence uses digital technologies, and the people who 'hack' it and fight against it are cyber security people. It will take people who know these technologies well and can analyze, recognize the vulnerabilities of these technologies and who have this perspective and have established the hacker logic.
Stating that artificial intelligence technology can be used in studies such as homework, theses and analysis, Bıçakcı stated that the researcher should stay within ethical boundaries by indicating in his publication at what point and how he used the technology used.
Pointing out that fraud has reached another dimension with “deepfake” technology, Bıçakcı said: “Scary situations can arise when you meet people who are deceived by a simple email message and lose their money , and then asks for something.” This makes them look and sound like people they know. Everything in the electronic world is possible. Maybe not young people, but people who use this technology without knowing much are exposed to it. Artificial intelligence and the technology we call “deepfake”. seem to magnify this problem many times over,” he said.
Bıçakcı pointed out that awareness of such scams should be raised through training and technical measures.
Bıçakcı pointed out that major developments in artificial intelligence, especially in the United States, will greatly affect the security of countries, explaining that other countries and companies are obtaining personal and sensitive data through the use of well-known technologies such as social media and search engines as well as artificial intelligence applications such as the new “ChatGPT”.
Native study of open artificial intelligence
Stating that companies should limit the use of these technologies and develop local alternatives to protect their projects, Bıçakcı said: “The artificial intelligence applications currently in use are systems that have a company behind them and we are not just users, but them also enable.” to develop ourselves further by sharing our data with them.” “Local versions of this must definitely be created in Turkey. In this context, perhaps we can participate in open source projects.” gave his assessment.
Prof. DR. Bıçakçı emphasized that there is now a concept called “open artificial intelligence” and said that studies are being carried out in some places in Europe, they are mostly carried out by companies and they have a small lead, and some companies have started working on this topic in Turkey, but it is definitely different and explained that it is necessary to carry out studies with more budget.
Explaining that certain bans can be imposed against risks, Bıçakcı added that each usage situation should be examined separately, a risk assessment should be carried out and ways to take safety measures should be sought.
