Müjde Esin, who was born as the youngest daughter of a family of six children in Patnos district of Ağrı, is a name that achieved success despite a difficult childhood thanks to her determination.
Esin said, “I was born and raised in a region where my curiosity was not very encouraged,” and explains her childhood interest in technology as follows:
“I was very curious about the inside of the remote controls. I opened it and looked at it. I repaired the inside of the radios. If there was a problem, if there was a technical problem at home, I was the one.” Who solved it?
6,500 young people learned about programming
Although Müjde Esin was five years late, she learned about programming through her friends who were studying engineering at the university where she was enrolled on a scholarship. When a project he carried out in this area received an award in Italy, the story of the company he founded, KızCode, began.
KızCode is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 to support young girls to take an active role in all fields. It also attracted attention abroad after it won the Best Social Responsibility Enterprise Award from the UK Home Office and the Association of Universities. Esin KızCode summarizes its purpose as follows:
“KızCode is actually a social enterprise that supports girls who were born and raised in these interests but have not received support and opportunities. It was born with the idea that if I did it, you can do it too. Since 2016, we’ve been “We’re actually working on it. We are actually using technology as a tool and developing educational models that stimulate girls’ curiosity.”
“If we did it, you can too”
KızCode continues to provide coding and gender equality training in Turkey and England. One of the young people receiving training is 18-year-old Duru Özer… Duru represented Turkey at the European Girls' Computer Olympiad and won the gold medal twice. Duru describes his achievements and dreams as follows:
“I represented Turkey in the 2022 and 2023 European Computer Girls Olympics and won the gold medal in both. It took place in Turkey in 2022. I officially won first place there too. Whatever I do, I want to do something.” That will bring progress in science and scholarship. “Theoretically, I want to make a difference and leave a mark in the field of computing.”
17-year-old Bergüzar Yürüm is also one of the award-winning students… Bergüzar says that these achievements will be an example for other girls:
“I went to Teknofest in 9th grade. We had a pretty big team there. We had a project to communicate about the earthquake among the rubble. We made it to the final in Istanbul. I think there are social taboos. I have problems too.” . Everyone has problems. “But we will be strong together. We will all make peace with this and the number of girls will increase day by day.”
Girls who improve their coding skills also bring their own unique styles and perspectives to the world of technology. Young people who make progress in this area shout to their peers, “If we did it, you can do it too.”
