The work carried out and the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology to develop national and national digital gaming applications continued this year.
While the focus of the National Technology Move was on new technologies, the gaming industry also shone with its projects for young people in this area.
On the one hand, companies appeared on the world stage with the games they developed, and on the other hand, academies, training and application centers opened the doors to this area for young people.
One of the steps taken in this regard was the launch of the “Game and Application Academy” with the support of the Ministry, the Presidential Digital Transformation Office and in collaboration with Google, T3 Enterprise Center and the Turkish Entrepreneurship Foundation.
The aim of the academy is to contribute to the growth of the digital economy, the development of digital skills of young people aged 18 to 29 who are university students or graduates, increasing employment in the technology sector and the dissemination of technology-oriented initiatives.
Half of them were girls
During the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 periods, the academy received more than 65,000 applications from 81 provinces, which equips 2,000 young people each year with skills in technology, application and game development, and entrepreneurship. 4,500 young people benefited from the training in the first two years. The academy graduated 1,969 people in 2 years and awarded 17,000 841 certificates.
The Academy's applications for the period 2023-2024 have been received and the evaluation processes have been completed. In December 2023, 2,000 people started their training.
In its third year, the Game and Application Academy offers completely free online training and activities to two thousand young people, 50 percent of whom are women and university students or graduates.
New game developers are on the way
In addition, a protocol was signed for the development of qualified human resources, as well as the creation of national professional standards and national qualifications specifically for IT professions.
The protocol aimed to both print out the Turkish software inventory project and prepare the national professional standards and national qualifications for computer science professions as needs for graduates of 42 software schools. In the first step, the professions “Mobile Software Developer”, “Game Developer” and “IT Architecture Specialist” were defined.
Last year, 74,106 people applied to 42 Istanbul and 42 Kocaeli schools, which are designed as a New Generation Software Developer Training Program. In the schools where 6,650 people completed pool training, 1,716 people successfully completed the training and 1,421 people were enrolled in these schools. There are currently 691 active students at the schools. The total number of students who completed the basic module of the curriculum was 47, including 35 students in the Istanbul campus and 12 students in the Kocaeli campus.
On the other hand, industry-specific funding is also planned in the areas of IT, software, digital games, telecommunications, financial technologies (fintech) and smart cities in order to open up industries abroad and increase exports.
Turkey’s first “unicorn” became a gambling company
Peak Games, Turkey's first “unicorn” (tech startup valued at more than $1 billion), was purchased by US gaming company Zynga for $1.8 billion.
Another unicorn game studio, Dream Games, has so far been invested by financial investors. The game “Royal Match” from Dream Games, one of Turkey's first unicorns, was the highest-grossing game in the world last year with $82.62 million.
