U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity claimed that many soldiers were injured at U.S. bases where Iran launched a missile attack.
The news reports: “Approximately 100 American soldiers were injured in numerous Iranian airstrikes on bases in the Middle East, and most of the injured returned to their duties.”
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell also confirmed in his statement to the television station that about 100 people have “certainly been injured to some degree” since July 7 and 96 percent of them have returned to duty.
“They are determined to get back into the fight. The vast majority of injuries sustained were minor concussions,” Parnell said. he said.
The claim that the Pentagon did not share it with the public
The New York Times (NYT) newspaper claimed that “the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has not disclosed to the public the information about some of Iran's recent attacks on US forces and that many US soldiers have been injured.”
Speaking to the newspaper, US officials claimed that before the attack in Jordan, which left two US soldiers dead and one missing, Iran had carried out three separate attacks on US forces in that country, with many US soldiers injured and many US helicopters damaged in those attacks.
The number of US soldiers killed in the war with Iran rose to 17
CENTCOM announced that two soldiers were killed and one soldier was missing in the Iranian attack on the US base in Jordan on July 17.
The Pentagon noted that the identities of these two soldiers have been determined and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
CENTCOM announced that a soldier died during the controlled destruction of unexploded ordnance from Iran's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in Iraq on July 18.
The incident in Iraq brings to 17 the number of U.S. soldiers declared dead in the war that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in February.
