The “Natural Gas” MoU was signed between Türkiye and TRNC

A “Memorandum of Understanding on Natural Gas Supply to TRNC” was signed between Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, TRNC Republican Assembly Speaker Ziya Öztürkler, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia Ali Murat Başçeri, as well as ministers and parliament members of both countries attended the signing ceremony at the TRNC Republican Assembly.

At the ceremony, the “Memorandum of Understanding on Natural Gas Supply to TRNC” was signed between Vice President Yılmaz and TRNC Prime Minister Üstel.

“We are building a strong future together with our homeland Türkiye”

In his speech at the ceremony, Üstel stated that the Memorandum of Understanding is a strategic step that will shape the energy future of the TRNC and give a new direction to its development journey, saying: “We are not leaving the future of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to chance. We will create a strong infrastructure in the energy sector. We will support production. We will increase investments. We will expand employment. We will prepare a strong future for our youth where they can live with hope in their own country.” he said.

Üstel explained that the Anatolian water reaching the island via an undersea pipeline, along with the water, instilled confidence in the TRNC, pointing out that after natural gas, they would focus on the power project that would come from Türkiye via a submarine cable.

Üstel said that they see Türkiye's support in all areas and said: “We are building a strong future together with our homeland Türkiye.” he said.

Üstel pointed out that the memorandum signed today is a new sign of the shared partnership between the Republic of Türkiye and the TRNC and stated that the two countries also sent a strong message in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Üstel said: “The Turkish Cypriot people exist in this region. They are deeply rooted. They are building their future with their sovereign will. And they continue their path resolutely with the strong support of the motherland Türkiye. We know that when there is Türkiye, there is trust. When there is Türkiye, there is power.” he said.

Üstel recalled that although they have completed the feasibility studies for electricity from Türkiye via submarine cables, under pressure from the Greek Cypriots, they are still waiting for approval from the European Union and its energy organization ENTSO-E (European Network of Electricity Transmission System Operators, to which the electricity transmission system operators in Europe are affiliated): “We are bringing natural gas from our home country, the Republic of Turkey, to our country with a new pipeline. There is neither.” Neither the Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus nor Europe is stopping us from doing this.” he said.

Prime Minister Üstel, on behalf of his government and the Turkish Cypriot people, thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Vice President Yılmaz, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar and the Government of the Republic of Turkey for contributing to this historic step.
