The statement from the New York Fire Department said that an explosion occurred during attempts to extinguish the fire at a shipyard in the Staten Island area.
The statement noted that while one person died from the fire and explosion, 36 people were injured, most of them firefighters, and three of them were in serious condition.
“This was a complex and rapidly evolving emergency,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference about the incident.
The statement said more than 200 firefighters and paramedics were at the scene and the cause of the fire and explosion was under investigation.
