The EU is preparing to fine Meta for child safety violations

The focus of the investigation is Meta's way of enforcing the 13-year age limit.

European Union (EU) regulators note that children can easily bypass age verification when creating an account.

It also points out that the mechanism for reporting underage users is too complex, making legal obligations ineffective.

Millions of children are at risk

According to the EU, an estimated 10 to 12 percent of children under 13 across the European Union currently use Facebook or Instagram.

Experts point out that there are scientific studies showing that social media use increases mental health and safety risks for young users.

The EU requires Meta to strengthen its detection tools, improve its verification systems and more aggressively delete the accounts of minors.

Chance of a big fine

It is stated that if Meta does not correct the identified deficiencies, Meta will face a fine of up to 6 percent of its global annual turnover under the Digital Services Act.

However, the Company has the opportunity to respond to the findings and take corrective action before making a final decision.

Meta defends security systems

Meta, which resists the allegations, emphasizes that its platforms are designed for users aged 13 and over.

The company argues that it already uses automated systems to detect and remove underage accounts and continues to invest in these technologies.

Meta also announced that new security features will be available in future updates to strengthen child protection.

Controls and parental controls

This investigation, launched in 2024, is seen as part of increasing regulatory pressure on child safety and social media addiction across Europe.

On the other hand, Meta announced that it has made the “Meta AI Child Chats” feature visible so that parents can monitor their children's conversations using artificial intelligence.

This step is intended to make it easier for parents to control the digital environment.
