The company, which owns Instagram and Facebook, told employees on Tuesday that a new tool that runs on metacomputers and internal applications will record their activities and use them as training data for artificial intelligence technology.
A Meta spokesperson said in a statement on the matter that when developing tools to help people complete everyday tasks on computers, the models need real-world examples of how people actually use them.
The spokesperson explained that the data will not be used for any other purposes and that necessary precautions have been taken to protect sensitive content.
The employees are dissatisfied with the decision
A Meta employee who did not want to be named described the use of even the smallest movements on the computer to train artificial intelligence and the combination of this situation with new dismissal expectations as “dystopian”.
Another person who recently left the company said that the tracking tool was the last chance to force artificial intelligence on everyone.
While Meta has laid off about 2,000 employees this year, larger-scale layoffs are expected in the coming months. The company decided to implement a partial hiring freeze last month and the number of job postings, which stood at about 800 in March, has now dropped to seven.
Investments are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence
This new tracking tool, called MCI (Model Capability Initiative), is the first for Meta to record employees' computer activities to develop artificial intelligence tools.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg is trying to position the company at the forefront of technology by promising to increase spending on artificial intelligence projects this year.
Meta plans to spend about $140 billion on artificial intelligence in 2026. That's almost double the amount invested in technology a year ago.
The company announced in January that 2026 “will be the year artificial intelligence will radically change the way we work.”
