Contact traffic sets new records in trade between Turkey and Syria

With the collapse of the old regime in Syria on December 8, 2024, Türkiye's trade relations with this country reached a new dimension.

In this context, Türkiye and Syria have recently focused on new cooperation in many areas, from industry to transportation, from energy to trade.

In parallel with political and diplomatic relations, meetings to improve economic relations are held one after the other.

Finally, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Syria yesterday. In this context, Fidan met with Syrian President Ahmed Shara and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the meeting, regional developments and security issues were discussed, as well as improving the parties' bilateral relations and intensifying economic cooperation.

A JETCO meeting and investment forum will take place

In order to strengthen cooperation, the first meeting of the Turkey-Syria Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) will be held tomorrow. The meeting is scheduled to be co-chaired by Trade Minister Ömer Bolat and Syrian Economy and Industry Minister Nidal Şaar.

As part of the meeting, the Türkiye-Syria Business and Investment Forum will also be held with the participation of representatives of the business community. Business people from the fields of energy, construction, health, nutrition, agriculture, animal husbandry, logistics, education and textiles are expected to hold bilateral meetings at the forum.

The forum also hosts panels on the topics of logistics, banking and contracts.

New record export target

The contacts are expected to improve cooperation in many areas and open the door to new records in trade between the two countries.

Syria was added to Türkiye’s list of “export destination countries” this year.

Especially recently, the increase in Türkiye's exports to this country has attracted attention.

Exports rose by around 60 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, from $2.2 billion to $3.5 billion. In last year's exports, the “milling products, malt, starch, inulin, wheat gluten” division took first place with $232.7 million.

In the first two months of this year, the data came to the fore after the “export destination country” decision.

Following the collapse of the old regime, Türkiye's exports to Syria increased by 47.5 percent to $526.2 million in the first two months of 2025, from $356.6 million compared to the same period last year.

Türkiye's exports to Syria exceeded $666.7 million in the two months of this year, an annual increase of 26.7 percent. The amount in question has been recorded as a dataset since 2013, when the data was available at the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

The “motor vehicles, tractors, bicycles, motorcycles and other land vehicles, their parts, parts and accessories” sector took first place in exports with $72.7 million.
