The sun's power to generate electricity increased 641 times

Türkiye, which continues its investments in renewable energy without compromising to ensure security of supply, has exponentially increased its installed solar energy capacity every year, which was zero in 2013.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, installed solar energy capacity, which was 40.2 megawatts in 2014, increased 641 times to 25,827 megawatts by the end of January 2026. The share of solar energy in total installed capacity rose from 1 per thousand in the same period to 20.9 percent at the beginning of the year.

A similar increase was observed in solar power production. Production, which was 17 gigawatt hours in 2014, reached 38,000 69 gigawatt hours by the end of 2025. While solar power plants (SPP) accounted for 4.87 percent of the total electricity production of 31.9 million megawatt hours in January, the share of solar energy in production rose to 7.11 percent from 27.6 million megawatt hours in February.

When it comes to total installed capacity, clean energy stands out

Clean energy sources occupy an important place in Türkiye's power generation portfolio, which focuses on using domestic resources to combat climate change and reduce the current account deficit.

A particular focus is on investments in renewable energy as part of the goals of expanding Türkiye's industrial sector, meeting increasing energy needs with the growing population and reducing the current account deficit caused by the import of fossil fuels.

Solar power plants are characterized by providing clean and sustainable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening energy supply security, low operating costs and using domestic renewable resources.

The total installed electricity capacity in Türkiye reached 123,320 megawatts at the end of February. Solar power plants accounted for 20.9 percent of installed capacity.

In addition, the share of hydroelectric power plants in the total installed capacity was recorded at 26 percent, natural gas power plants at 19.7 percent, coal-fired power plants at 17.7 percent, wind power plants at 12.1 percent, geothermal energy at 1.4 percent and other sources at 2.1 percent.

There are a total of 41,505 power generation plants in Turkey. Looking at the distribution of power plants according to resources, solar power plants stand out with 39,426 power plants, followed by dam hydroelectric power plants with 776 systems and wind power plants with 403 power plants.

A fifth of the installed capacity is provided by solar energy

With the implemented renewable energy projects, one fifth of the total installed electricity in Türkiye is provided by solar energy. The goal is to make $80 billion in new investments by 2035 to reach 20,000 megawatts in solar and wind energy.

With the projects completed last year, a third of the 2035 goal has already been achieved. Türkiye's energy independence will be strengthened by commissioning new investments.

A total of 650 megawatts of solar energy capacity will be added in 8 projects with a contribution of 102 million euros as a result of the YEKA SPP-2025 competitions conducted last year with the vision of 2053 Net Zero Emission.
