Handle with care: There might be glass in the fried rice at Trader Joe's.
The manufacturer, Ajinomoto Foods North America, recalled more than 3 million pounds of frozen chicken fried rice that “may be contaminated with foreign material, particularly glass,” according to a statement alarm issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Division last week.
The recall affects batches of Trader Joe's store brand chicken fried rice with a sell-by date between September 8th and November 17th. The product, which contains fried rice, vegetables, seasoned dark chicken and eggs, was sold nationwide in approximately one-pound plastic bags.
The recall also applies to Ajinomoto-branded cases, which are distributed only to Canadian retailers.
Trader Joe's said in one opinion On Friday, customers with recalled products can return them to any Trader Joe's location for a full refund.
Ajinomoto notified the USDA's Food Safety Division after receiving four consumer complaints about the discovery of glass in her fried rice. There have been no confirmed injuries associated with the product, according to the warning, which advises consumers to return or throw away the product.
Ajinomoto did not respond to a request for comment.
Trader Joe's had 10 product recalls in 2025, affecting items such as peaches, turkey wraps and Cajun-style fettuccini alfredo, all of which were recalled due to possible Listeria contamination, according to a list provided by the company website.
Acai bowls were recalled due to possible plastic contamination, while sesame miso salad and spicy honey mustard dressing were recalled due to undeclared allergens.
Trader Joe's isn't the only grocer addressing food safety issues. The German discount supermarket chain Aldi also recalled ten products in 2025, while the website of the Amazon-owned organic grocery chain Whole Foods recalled 16 products.
The Monrovia-based company, which opened its first store in Pasadena in 1967, is privately held and known for its numerous private label products, including the cult favorite frozen orange chicken, cookie butter and viral miniature tote bags.
Trader Joe's is also facing a legal challenge from Smucker, which has filed a lawsuit accusing it of copying its trademark crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The times reported last year.
