2025 was the deadliest year for journalists, with Israel killing the most

CPJ, headquartered in New York, US, stressed that 2025 was the deadliest year for journalists in the more than 30 years they began keeping records.

The report, titled “A Record Number of 129 Press Members Were Killed in 2025, Two-Thirds of the Deaths Sourced from Israel,” said the number of journalists killed worldwide last year reached its highest level ever.

The report said more than three-quarters of members of the press lost their lives in “conflict environments” last year.

In the top five rankings, 86 journalists were killed in Israeli attacks, 9 in attacks in Sudan, 6 in attacks in Mexico, 4 in Russian attacks on Ukraine and 3 journalists in the Philippines.

Israel “significant exception”

The report points out that Israel tops the list when it comes to press killings, saying: “The numbers in other countries are still very low compared to Israel. Israel is an important exception. The main reason for the increase in deaths of journalists around the world is the persistent culture of impunity for attacks against the press.” The expression was used.

The report noted that the Israeli army “has committed more murders of journalists than any other army” since CPJ began documenting it in 1992, and highlighted that more than 60 percent of the 86 press members killed in Israeli strikes last year “were Palestinians reporting from Gaza.”

The number of journalists killed by drones has increased

The report said the increase in the number of journalists killed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in 2025 was a “clear warning sign” and that UAVs were remotely controlled and could visually detect targets.

The report said that two journalists were killed in UAV attacks in 2023, 21 in 2024 and 39 in 2025, and that Israel was “responsible for approximately 75 percent of journalists killed in UAV attacks over the past three years.”

CPJ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jodie Ginsberg, whose opinion is included in the report, said attacks on the media were a leading indicator of attacks on other freedoms and said: “Much more needs to be done to prevent these killings and punish the perpetrators. We are all at risk when journalists are killed for reporting the news.” he said.
