Trump said the deal with Greenland was “open-ended” and they could “do whatever they want”

US President Trump evaluated his trip to members of the press on the plane as he returned to Washington after the 56th meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

Trump stated that they had had very positive meetings with both NATO and European leaders, particularly regarding Greenland, and argued that they had gotten everything they wanted on the issue.

Regarding the framework agreement they had reached with NATO, Trump said: “We can say it's really a negotiation, but this agreement is open-ended, so there's no time limit. It's not 99 years or 50 years, it lasts forever. (On Greenland) We can do anything we want, including military matters.” he said.

Regarding cooperation with NATO on what kind of activities the US will conduct in Greenland, Trump said: “We will all work together, and in fact NATO will be with us. Some work will be costly, but we will have no costs other than building the Golden Dome. We will come here for the Golden Dome.” he said.

Asked how Denmark viewed the process, Trump said: “Actually, everyone liked it. I'll update you on the Denmark issue in two weeks.” he replied.

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

Trump emphasized that serious progress had been made in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and referred to his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump pointed out that they had a very productive meeting with Zelensky and, when asked whether Russia would make concessions, replied: “(Russia will also make concessions. Everyone makes concessions to achieve this.”) he replied.

Trump said that he believes at this point both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky want peace.

The US president also responded to the statement that Russia wanted to pay the $1 billion entry fee required to join the Peace Council from its own frozen accounts by saying: “For me there is no problem.” he said.

“We have a fleet on the way to Iran”

Trump made a remarkable statement while answering a question about Iran.

Trump claimed that executions in Iran had stopped following his demands, saying: “We have a lot of ships heading that way, a big fleet heading that way, just in case, we'll see what happens. Of course I'd rather nothing happen, but we're monitoring the situation very closely.” he said.

While Trump did not make a clear statement about whether the fleet he said was heading toward the Middle East was a new situation specifically affecting Iran, “we have a huge fleet heading in that direction.” he said.
