Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, delivered Guterres' statements on US-Venezuela tensions at the press conference at the UN headquarters in New York.
“The Secretary-General (Guterres) is focused on preventing further escalation. The Secretary-General calls for restraint and immediate de-escalation of the situation,” Haq said. he said.
Haq called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter and other legal frameworks for maintaining peace in the region, saying Guterres “believes that all disputes should be resolved by peaceful means.”
The statement followed U.S. President Donald Trump's Dec. 15 statement that he had ordered a “complete and total blockade” of all sanctioned ships entering or leaving the South American country of Venezuela.
Venezuela accuses the US of “theft.”
In his statement on December 11, US President Donald Trump announced that they had seized the oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Trump said they seized the tanker “for good reason” and would keep it.
In his previous remarks, Trump had stated that they could launch land attacks against Venezuela and that these attacks would begin “soon.”
Venezuela, on the other hand, called the US seizure of the oil tanker off the country's coast a “clear theft” and said it would present the situation to international authorities.
On December 12, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro stressed that his country's commercial rights in the Caribbean will be protected, saying: “Therefore, Venezuela firmly rejects this criminal act of piracy throughout the Caribbean. I have given all the necessary instructions to protect our diplomatic, commercial and legal rights.” he said.
