The incident occurred on a CTA Blue Line train just before 9:30 p.m. Monday evening. The surveillance camera footage shows Reed walking into the carriage with a bottle in his hand and approaching the 26-year-old passenger.
According to the complaint, the suspect poured liquid on the woman's head and body and then attempted to set her on fire.
His body caught fire and there was a way to escape in the car
It was stated that the woman resisted the attacker and ran to the front of the car, Reed chased after her, then fired the bottle in his hand, setting the woman on fire again. The complaint says Reed watched the woman burst into flames.
The victim's body was almost completely engulfed in flames and he rolled to the ground and tried to put out the fire. The train stopped at the Clark and Lake stop in downtown Chicago. As soon as the woman reached the platform, she collapsed and people around helped her. Reed also got out of the car and walked away from the scene.
Severe burns, quick arrest
When police arrived at the scene, the woman had severe burns on her face and body. A partially melted bottle, a lighter, remains of a flammable liquid on the seat and parts of the woman's burned clothing were found inside the car.
Surveillance cameras showed that the attacker had filled a small container with gasoline at a gas station shortly before the incident. Reed was identified and arrested Tuesday morning for the same clothing he was wearing and burns on his right hand.
According to the criminal complaint, Reed repeatedly shouted the phrase “Burn alive” while being taken to the police station. As he entered federal court on Wednesday, he shouted loudly, “I plead guilty,” refused the assistance of an attorney and began singing throughout the hearing. The court decided to conduct a psychological examination of the suspect.
