While more than 2,700 flights were canceled in the U.S. on Sunday, about 10,000 flights were canceled on Sunday alone, according to the FlightAware website, which monitors flights in the country.
More than a thousand flights were canceled on Friday and more than 1,500 on Saturday.
In contrast, US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy stated that US air traffic could decline significantly if the closure continued.
Duffy warned that further cuts could reduce flights by up to 20 percent.
While the decline in the number of active-duty air traffic control officers due to the government shutdown is seen as the main reason for flight cancellations, companies are blaming the government and Congress.
