Demonstrations in Iran
In Iran, protests started by shopkeepers in Tehran's Grand Bazaar began on December 28, 2025, due to the sharp devaluation of the local currency against foreign currencies and the economic problems that spread to many cities.
Following events during the intensifying protests on January 8 in Tehran, the capital of Iran, the country's government blocked internet access. Internet access is reported to have been partially and limitedly restored in recent days.
Although demonstrations in Iran have subsided, HRANA, based in the US state of Virginia, continues to update the number of deaths and detentions and claims to have confirmed additional cases. While Iranian authorities have not yet released a total number of people killed or injured in the demonstrations, they said 3,000 people were arrested on charges of being members of terrorist organizations or of provoking the events.
Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in his Jan. 17 statement that during the demonstrations, “Israel- and U.S.-affiliated people caused great damage and killed several thousand people.”
